The carefully crafted liturgy of Holy Week in the Valley of the Fallen

The Schola Cantorum of the Holy Cross will participate in the main offices of Holy Week at the basilica of the Valley of the Fallen, giving voice to the celebrations of the Paschal Triduum with a carefully crafted repertoire of Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony. Each piece has been prepared over weeks, in a process that combines musical, liturgical, and personal training, with the aim of fully integrating into the religious meaning of the offices.

The celebrations will begin on Holy Thursday with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, scheduled between 4:45 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. On Good Friday, at the same time, the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion will take place. The central moment will arrive on the night of Holy Saturday with the Easter Vigil, which will develop between 10:30 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. Finally, on Easter Sunday, the solemn mass will be celebrated between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

The offices will take place in the basilica of the Valley of the Fallen and are liturgical celebrations open to the public until capacity is reached. They do not require invitation or specific entry, although attendance is usually high in the central ceremonies, especially in the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. The intervention of the Schola Cantorum is integrated into the liturgical development of the offices, without a concert character, as part of a consolidated tradition in which sacred music holds a central place.

These celebrations take place in a context marked by the political debate surrounding the future of the site, with initiatives promoted by the Government of Spain aimed at its resignification, which has generated opposing positions on the preservation of its current religious and symbolic character.
