Gospel of the day March 27, 2026 – John 10:31-42

First Reading

Reading from the book of Jeremiah

Jeremiah 20:10-13

At that time, Jeremiah said:
“I hear the whispering of the people:
‘Let us denounce Jeremiah,
let us denounce the prophet of terror’.
All my friends watch my steps,
waiting for me to stumble and fall, saying:
‘If he stumbles and falls, we will overcome him
and take revenge on him’.

But the Lord, a mighty warrior, is at my side;
therefore my persecutors will stumble and fall
and not prevail against me;
they will be put to shame because of their failure,
their disgrace will be everlasting and unforgettable.

Lord of hosts, who tests the just
and probes the depths of hearts,
let me see your vengeance against them,
for to you I have entrusted my cause.

Sing to the Lord,
praise the Lord,
for he has rescued the life of the poor
from the hand of the wicked’’.

Gospel

Reading from the holy gospel according to Saint John

John 10:31-42

At that time, when Jesus finished speaking, the Jews picked up stones to stone him. Jesus said to them: “I have done many good works in your presence on behalf of the Father; for which of them are you trying to stone me?”

The Jews answered him: “We are not stoning you for any good work, but for blasphemy, because you, who are only a man, claim to be God.” Jesus answered them: “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods”’? If it calls them gods to whom the word of God came (and Scripture cannot be set aside), how can you say that the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world blasphemes because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? If I do not perform my Father’s works, do not believe me; but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” Then they tried to arrest him, but he escaped from their power.

So Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing earlier, and he remained there. Many came to him and said, “John performed no sign, but everything John said about this man was true.” And many there began to believe in him.
