Cuban exiles sign an agreement to promote the democratic transition on the island

Leaders of the Cuban opposition in exile signed in Miami the so-called “Agreement for the Liberation of Cuba”, a roadmap to end the communist regime and call for free elections on the island. The initiative arises at a time of strong international pressure on the Havana government and amid discreet diplomatic movements in which the Vatican is trying to facilitate contacts between the United States and Cuba.

According to ACI Prensa, the agreement was signed on March 2 in the Father Varela Hall of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, patroness of Cuba, in Miami.

The text was signed by the coalitions Assembly of the Cuban Resistance and Steps for Change, as well as opposition organizations both inside and outside the island. Its promoters present it as an alliance aimed at articulating a common strategy to end the current political system and restore democracy in the country.

Ten points for a new stage in Cuba

The so-called “Agreement for Liberation” proposes a roadmap that includes several phases aimed at the fall of the regime, the stabilization of the country, and its subsequent democratization.

Among the central objectives of the document are the release of political prisoners, the dismantling of the Communist Party’s repressive apparatus, and the creation of a provisional government in charge of directing a time-limited transition that culminates in free and multiparty elections.

The promoters of the agreement maintain that it is a concrete plan to open a new political period on the island after decades of communist regime.

An increasingly tense international scenario

The initiative of the Cuban exiles coincides with a time of growing international pressure on the Havana regime. Washington has toughened energy sanctions against the island, which has worsened the fuel shortage and the economic crisis.

In parallel, U.S. President Donald Trump has acknowledged that his administration maintains contacts related to the situation in Cuba, while U.S. diplomats have indicated that the country is going through a decisive moment for its political future.

The Vatican tries to facilitate dialogue

All this is happening while the Vatican maintains discreet diplomatic contacts related to the Cuban crisis. Sources close to the Secretariat of State have confirmed that the Holy See is trying to facilitate channels of communication between the United States and Cuba amid the deterioration of the situation on the island.
