Leo XIV will visit Algeria in April, according to the Apostolic Nuncio in the country.

In these days of growing speculation about the apostolic journeys of Leo XIV, the Algerian media outlet, citing diplomatic sources, reports that the Pope will make an official visit to the African country on the upcoming 13, 14, and 15 of April. However, the official announcement from the Vatican is expected next week.

According to the published information, the Holy Father will visit the cities of Algiers and Annaba. The program would include several highlighted events, among them an official speech and visits to the church of Our Lady of Africa, in the Algerian capital, and to the Basilica of Saint Augustine, in Annaba.

Visits to Emblematic Places

Our Lady of Africa is one of the most representative Catholic temples in the north of the continent, while the Basilica of Saint Augustine is dedicated to the Bishop of Hippo, one of the most influential Church Fathers in the history of Christianity. Both sites possess strong religious and historical symbolism.

Relations between Algeria and the Holy See

The visit was evoked on February 9th past in the El Mouradia palace, in Algiers, by the new ambassador of the Holy See in Algeria, Javier Herrera Corona. The apostolic nuncio made these statements after presenting his credentials to the President of the Republic.

Herrera Corona described his meeting with the head of state as “very cordial” and emphasized the solidity of relations between Algeria and the Holy See, which—as he recalled—date back more than fifty years. Likewise, he highlighted the importance of the upcoming papal visit, which, in his opinion, will contribute to strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual respect between both countries.

A Historic Visit

If officially confirmed in the coming days, this trip would represent the first visit of a Pope to Algeria, the land of Saint Augustine. The trip would take place one week after the celebration of Easter, scheduled this year for April 5th.
