Gospel of the day February 21, 2026 – Luke 5:27-32

First Reading

Reading from the book of Isaiah

Isaiah 58:9-14

Thus says the Lord:
“When you renounce oppressing others
and banish from yourself the threatening gesture and the offensive word;
when you share your bread with the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the afflicted,
your light will shine in the darkness
and your gloom will be like noonday.
The Lord will give you constant rest;
in the desert he will satisfy your hunger and give strength to your body;
you will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.

You will build on your old ruins
and raise up on ancient foundations;
you will be called a repairer of breaches
and restorer of ruined homes.

If you refrain from trampling the sabbath
and from pursuing your own interests on my holy day,
if you call the sabbath a delight
and honor it as the Lord’s holy day,
if you honor it by not traveling,
by not seeking your own interest or pursuing your own affairs,
then the Lord will be your delight.
I will set you on my mountains,
I will make you taste the inheritance of your father Jacob”.

Gospel

Reading from the holy gospel according to Saint Luke

Luke 5:27-32

At that time, Jesus saw a tax collector named Levi (Matthew) sitting at his tax office, and he said to him: “Follow me.” He got up, left everything behind, and followed him.

Levi gave a great banquet in his house in honor of Jesus, and a large number of tax collectors and others were at the table with them. The Pharisees and the scribes criticized the disciples for this, saying to them: “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” Jesus answered them: “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance”.
