Seville begins Lenten preparations with the Carnival Triduum in the Cathedral

The Seville Cathedral will host from February 15 to 17 the celebration of the traditional Carnival Triduum, a liturgical gathering that precedes the start of Lent (this year it begins on February 18) and which is part of the metropolitan temple’s own worship calendar.

According to the Seville Cathedral itself, the worship services will take place each day at 5:30 p.m. in the main altar. The celebration will consist of a Liturgy of the Word followed by Eucharistic adoration, in an atmosphere of prayer and recollection that invites the faithful to spiritually prepare for the beginning of Lent.

The Dance of the Seises, a centuries-old tradition

One of the most significant moments of the triduum will be, as usual, the traditional Dance of the Seises. This ancient tradition, documented since the 16th century, constitutes one of the most emblematic expressions of Seville’s religious and cultural heritage.

During the adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, a group of children performs the well-known liturgical dance, dressed in the characteristic costume that identifies this custom. The scene—the Seises dancing before the main altar—is one of the most recognizable images of the Cathedral’s liturgical life and reflects the continuity of a tradition that has spanned generations.

Far from being merely a folkloric element, the dance is integrated into the celebratory context as a public manifestation of faith and Eucharistic veneration.

Access for the Faithful and Broadcast

According to the Cathedral’s website, it will open its doors at 4:45 p.m. to facilitate the entry of the faithful, who can access through the Palos and San Miguel doors. As in other prominent celebrations, the triduum can also be followed live through the temple’s official YouTube channel, allowing participation from those who cannot attend in person.
