The lack of a license forces the temporary closure of the Cathedral of Justo

The Mejorada del Campo City Council (Madrid) has ordered the temporary closure of the well-known Justo Cathedral for lacking an opening license, as reported by the weekly Alfa y Omega.

The iconic building, erected over decades by Justo Gallego, is currently managed by the NGO Mensajeros de la Paz, which has confirmed the temporary closure of the premises while the corresponding administrative processing is completed.

Lack of Opening License

On the temple’s website, one can read these days a notice indicating that the cathedral will remain closed until the processing of the municipal license is completed.

Mensajeros de la Paz has explained in a statement that it is managing an opening and operating license for the space as a social civic center and exhibition hall. Since it took over the management of the property, the organization assures that it has worked to advance its regularization and technical adaptation.

Over the last three years, the entity has submitted various documentation to the city council in order to obtain the necessary authorization.

“An Administrative Matter”

According to the statement issued by the NGO, the closure notification was received recently and complied with immediately. The organization emphasizes that the suspension is exclusively due to an administrative matter related to the license.

In this context, Mensajeros de la Paz has appealed for collaboration with the City Council and the rest of the public administrations to complete the pending procedures and reopen the space to the public with the required legal and safety guarantees.

The Legacy of Justo Gallego

The so-called Justo Cathedral was built in an artisanal manner by Justo Gallego over more than half a century, becoming one of the most unique buildings in the Community of Madrid. After his death in 2021, the project came under the guardianship of Mensajeros de la Paz, which took on the commitment to preserve and regularize the premises.

The organization insists that its goal is to reopen the space as soon as the administrative procedures are completed, within the current legal framework and in cooperation with the local authorities.
