The Church in Mexico calls for a new «National Dialogue for Peace» amid the escalation of violence

The Catholic Church in Mexico has convened the Second National Dialogue for Peace, an event aimed at moving from diagnosis to shared responsibility in the face of the violence that is suffocating the country. The gathering will take place from January 30 to February 1, 2026 at the ITESO, Universidad Jesuita de Guadalajara (Jalisco), and it seeks to bring together more than a thousand participants from various sectors: Church, universities, civil organizations, business sector, youth, victims, and local authorities.

The initiative—driven by ecclesial and social actors—presents itself as an attempt to articulate efforts and “reconnect” in a context that organizers describe as polarized and marked by distrust. The call’s slogan is explicit: “dialogue, articulate, and transform to live in peace”, with a focus on the reconstruction of the social fabric from the local level.

According to the promoters, the country faces a fundamental decision: continue “managing” the violence or demand a sustainable and territorial peace capable of surviving political cycles. In that vein, the second dialogue seeks to consolidate a work agenda that goes beyond statements, incorporating action pathways and verifiable commitments, with special attention to listening to the victims and the responsibility of the authorities.

The event continues the process begun in 2023, when the first edition was held in Puebla. At that time, the need to coordinate efforts in the face of advancing insecurity was raised; now, the call insists that peace is not built with slogans, but with community, justice, and real presence in the territory, where violence has normalized fear and extortion.
