The Shroud of Turin can now be explored online from any device

The Diocese of Turin has presented a new digital reading experience of the image of the Shroud of Turin, accessible from anywhere in the world and from mobile, tablet or PC; Pope Leo XIV was the first to try it on Friday, January 9, 2026, during an audience in the Apostolic Palace where it was presented by Cardinal Roberto Repole, Archbishop of Turin and Pontifical Custodian of the Shroud.

The tool, integrated into the «Avvolti» project, allows “exploring” the image of the Shroud on screen and zooming in on details —such as the face or the crown of thorns— with explanations and links to the Gospel passages of the Passion.

Access is made via the Internet through avvolti.org without requiring a specific device: smartphone, tablet or computer. The proposal seeks to bring the Shroud of Turin to the general public “without lowering the rigor” of texts and images, but with a format designed for non-specialists.

From the 1:1 “Table” of Turin to a Worldwide Platform

This “global” version stems from a previous experience shown in Turin during the 2025 Jubilee: an “Avvolti Shop” installed in Piazza Castello, where a digital reading of the Shroud of Turin at 1:1 scale was presented on a five-meter “table”. According to the diocese, that installation received more than 30,000 visitors from 79 countries in eight days (from April 28 to May 5). Now, that same journey —adapted— is available on the web.

Cardinal Repole frames the launch within a “synodal pastoral” program —related to the Shroud of Turin— initiated in 2024, with Avvolti as the axis of the 2025 Jubilee year. The diocese announces that in the coming months new initiatives will be prepared to articulate an itinerary leading to the 2033 Jubilee.
