León XIV will convene a second consistory of cardinals at the end of June

Pope Leo XIV will hold a second consistory of cardinals at the end of June 2026, coinciding with the proximity of the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. The convocation was confirmed both by a cardinal who participated in the recent Extraordinary Consistory and by the official Vatican spokesperson.

The announcement was made by Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco, O.P., Archbishop of Algiers, in statements to the specialized media The College of Cardinals Report at the end of the Extraordinary Consistory held in early January.

“He gave us an appointment for June, two days at the end of June,” affirmed the cardinal, alluding to the words of the Pontiff addressed to the College of Cardinals.

The information was subsequently confirmed by the Holy See’s spokesperson, Matteo Bruni, during a press conference following the consistory. As he explained, the meeting is scheduled for dates close to the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, which the Church celebrates on June 29, and the probable dates being considered are June 27 and 28.

Bruni also added a significant detail about the governing style of the current Pontiff: Pope Leo XIV has expressed his intention to convene an extraordinary consistory of cardenals every year, with an approximate duration of three or four days, as a habitual instrument of consultation and collegial discernment.

The convocation of a new consistory just six months after the first underscores the role that the Pope wishes to give to the College of Cardinals in accompanying government decisions and in reflecting on the main challenges facing the Church today, thus marking his synodal style.
