First Reading
Reading from the first book of Samuel
1 Samuel 1, 24-28
In those days, Hannah took Samuel, who was still very small, to the house of the Lord in Shiloh, and also brought a three-year-old bull, a sack of flour, and a skin of wine.
Once the bull was sacrificed, Hannah presented the child to Eli and said to him: “Listen to me, sir: I swear by my life that I am that woman who was beside you, in this place, praying to the Lord. This is the child I asked for from the Lord and whom he has granted me. Therefore, now I offer him to the Lord, so that he may be dedicated to him for life.” And they worshiped the Lord.
Gospel
Reading from the holy gospel according to Saint Luke
Luke 1, 46-56
At that time, Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God, my savior,
because he has looked upon the lowliness of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
because the Almighty has done great things for me.
Holy is his name,
and his mercy extends from generation to generation
to those who fear him.
He has shown the strength of his arm:
he has scattered the proud in their inmost thoughts,
he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted those who are humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.”
Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months and then returned home.
