Brazil: The Pope appoints a new auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte

The Vatican announced on this December 3 the appointment of the Brazilian priest Evandro Campos Maria as the new auxiliary bishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais. The Holy Father has also assigned him the titular see of Cilibia.

With this appointment, the archdiocese—one of the most extensive and influential in Brazil—strengthens its episcopal team with a priest trained both in his native land and in Rome, and with a broad trajectory in theological teaching and priestly formation.

Academic and Priestly Trajectory

Born on April 25, 1974 in Belo Horizonte, Campos Maria completed his studies in Philosophy and Theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais. He later obtained the Licentiate in Fundamental Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, one of the most prestigious academic institutions of the Church.

He was ordained a priest on April 27, 2002 for the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte, in which he has developed all his pastoral activity.

Extensive Experience in Parishes and Theological Formation

Over his more than twenty years of ministry, Msgr. Campos Maria has held various pastoral and academic positions. Among them, collaborator in the parish of Nossa Senhora de Nazareth in Caeté (2003-2025) and parochial vicar in several communities of Belo Horizonte and Nova Lima.

His work has been especially linked to theological formation: he was coordinator of the Theology course and of the School for the Permanent Diaconate at PUC Minas (2011-2016). Since 2017, he has been director of the Dom João Resende Costa Institute of Philosophy and Theology, in addition to being a professor of Theology.

In the pastoral field, he has served as assistant in the formation programs of the Casa Convivium Emaús since 2018.

Since 2018, Campos Maria had been serving as rector of the Archdiocesan Seminary Coração Eucarístico de Jesus, a position that placed him at the center of priestly formation in Belo Horizonte.
