Sánchez wants to enshrine abortion in the Constitution

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced on October 3 through his official account on the social network X that the Executive will bring to Parliament a proposal to constitutionalize the right to abortion.

In his message, Sánchez detailed two main steps. The first, to reform Royal Decree 825/2010 with the aim of preventing the offering of what he described as “misleading or anti-scientific information” about abortion. The second, to present to Parliament a proposal to introduce into the Constitution the right to voluntary interruption of pregnancy, in line—as he pointed out—with the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court.

“The PP has decided to merge with the far right. That’s on them. They can do it. But not at the expense of women’s freedoms and rights,” Sánchez wrote in his post. And he added: “With this Government, in social rights, not one step back.”

The announcement comes in a context of political polarization around abortion legislation, in which the Executive intends to guarantee its recognition at the constitutional level to strengthen its legal stability for the future.
