Auxiliary Bishop of Madrid, Monsignor José Antonio Álvarez, dies of a heart attack

The auxiliary bishop of Madrid, Monsignor José Antonio Álvarez, passed away tonight, a victim of a heart attack, at the age of 50. The news has caused profound shock in the Madrid archdiocese, where he exercised his episcopal ministry since his appointment in 2023.

A native of Madrid, Mons. Álvarez was ordained a priest in 1990 and dedicated more than three decades to pastoral service in parishes and training areas of the diocese. His close and dedicated style earned him deep affection among priests, religious, and the faithful.

The Archdiocese of Madrid has asked for prayers for the eternal rest of his soul and for the consolation of his family, friends, and all those who mourn his loss.

“We pray for him, for his family, and for the entire Church of Madrid. Rest in peace,” Cardinal Cobo posted in a message informing the priests.

May Christ, Good Shepherd, receive him in his glory and the Virgin of the Almudena accompany him in his final encounter with God.
