The Diocese of Vic has reprimanded Argentine priest Gustavo Lombardo, parish priest of the Virgin of Mercy in Manresa and member of the Institute of the Incarnate Word, for his social media messages and sermons in which he openly defends the biblical teaching on man and woman, and denounces gender ideology, the LGBT lobby, and communism.
A reprimand for teaching biblical doctrine
The vicar general of Vic, Josep Maria Riba, explained that “personal actions of what one thinks cannot override diocesan actions.” With those words, he justified the admonition to the 45-year-old priest, who in one of his meditations recalled the Genesis account: God, seeing that it was not good for the man to be alone, created woman as “a suitable helper.”
Lombardo emphasized that this expression does not mean subordination or inferiority, but essential complementarity: man and woman have distinct roles, but are called to collaborate in God’s plan. “The man gives the woman a house, the woman returns a home,” summarized the parish priest. In the same vein, he quoted Pope St. John Paul II in Laborem exercens (n. 19), where he warns that the promotion of women cannot involve renouncing their specific character nor harming the family.
The mayor of Manresa, Marc Aloy, even requested an audience with Bishop Romà Casanova to convey the discomfort of part of the citizenry. The Diocese confirmed that “we have spoken with the person concerned and with his religious superior,” thereby closing the incident.
Messages against gender ideology and communism
In addition to his reflection on women, the priest has firmly questioned gender ideology and LGBT activism. “The LGBT agenda is against God, because it is against human nature, and by being against human nature, the doors are opened to the diabolical,” he assured.
He has also not hesitated to warn about communism, recalling the religious persecution during the Spanish Civil War: “if it could, it would kill us like in ’36.” These words have placed him at the center of the controversy.
An uncomfortable voice in Manresa
With thousands of followers on Instagram, Telegram, YouTube, and his own blog, Father Lombardo has become an influential figure in the digital realm. In Manresa, he had already generated controversy by pointing out the diabolical burden of the ‘correfocs’ during popular festivals.
Three years ago, he organized a “Men’s Rosary” in Valldaura square, with the aim of “recovering masculinity,” an initiative that also drew criticism from certain progressive sectors. However, for many faithful, his words represent doctrinal clarity at a time when the Church faces cultural and political pressures to dilute its teaching.
