On September 17 and 18, the Congress of Colombia is the host of the Convención Provida 2025, an event that brings together political, social, and academic representatives to reflect on the demographic challenge facing the nation. The meeting takes place in the Luis Guillermo Vélez auditorium and focuses on the defense of life and family.
The first day was inaugurated with an invocation to God, followed by the conference titled “A homeland without children is a homeland without a future”. The motto responds to the serious demographic crisis revealed by the data from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE).
An alarming drop in births
The DANE reported that in 2024 there were 445,000 births, which represents a decrease of 13.7% compared to 2023 and 32.7% compared to 2015. These numbers reflect a phenomenon of “demographic winter” that worries experts and legislators.
Meanwhile, the abortion clinic network Profamilia assured in February of this year that in the last three years more than 150,000 women accessed abortions in Colombia, and that only in 2024 more than “56,000” were performed.
The Voice of the Provida Caucus
Representative Luis Miguel López Aristizábal, member of the Bancada Provida, warned on his X account that low birth rates, the loss of values, and the growing number of abortions are taking a toll on Colombia:
“We are facing a demographic winter that threatens the future of the country”.
López Aristizábal invited parliamentarians and doctors to join the Convención Provida to promote policies for the defense of life and family.
Agenda of the Convención Provida 2025
The program includes for this September 18 a presidential panel titled “The Presidential Agenda in the Face of the Demographic Challenge: Life, Family, and Future of Colombia”, as well as a political panel with the motto “Defending life, securing the homeland: demographic vision from Congress and the regions”.
The second day also includes testimonies from large families, an international conference, and regional action forums, where legislative and social proposals are sought to be articulated to address the demographic collapse.
