Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–1153), Doctor of the Church and great reformer of the Cistercians, was called the “Mellifluous Doctor” for the sweetness and depth of his preaching. Advisor to kings and popes, he united contemplative life and apostolic action. Among the most outstanding features of his spirituality is his ardent love for the Most Holy Virgin, whom he proclaimed Stella Maris, “Star of the Sea”: a sure guide in the storms of life, powerful intercessor, and consolation of the faithful.
On September 12, the Church celebrates the memory of the Holy Name of Mary. In this context, Saint Bernard’s prayer resonates with special force, inviting us to invoke her sweet name as light and hope in every circumstance. This prayer, transmitted through the centuries, continues to be a source of consolation and confidence for the faithful.
Prayer of Saint Bernard to the Virgin Mary
Oh you, whoever you may be, who feel far from safe land, tossed by the waves of this world, do not turn your eyes from the light of this star!
If the wind of temptations rises, if the rock of tribulations obstructs your path, look to the star, call upon Mary.
If you are tossed by the waves of pride, ambition, slander, envy, look to the star, call upon Mary.
If anger, greed, impure desires shake the fragile boat of your soul, raise your eyes to Mary.
If, troubled by the memory of the enormity of your crimes, confused at the sight of the foulness of your conscience, terrified by the fear of Judgment, you begin to sink in the whirlpool of sadness, to plunge into the abyss of despair, think of Mary.
In dangers, in anguish, in doubts, think of Mary, call upon Mary. Let her name never depart from your lips, never leave your heart; and to obtain the help of her intercession, do not forget the example of her life.
Following her, you will not stray; praying to her, you will not despair; thinking of her, you will avoid every error. If she sustains you, you will not fall; if she protects you, you will have nothing to fear; if she leads you, you will not tire; if she is favorable to you, you will reach the goal.
And thus you will experience, by your own experience, how rightly it was said: “And the Virgin’s name was Mary”.
Memorare (Remember)
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.
