Era el cuarto cardenal más anciano de la Iglesia solo superado por el eslovaco Tomko, 98 años en menos de una semana; el angoleño Do Nascimento, 97 años y el argentino Karlic, 96.
Tras su muerte, la cuarta plaza pasa a ocuparla el ugandés Wamala.
